Previously unseen footage of the day I left London 2 YEARS AGO to start cycling around the world.
2 years ago I set off from London to spend the next 5 years of my life cycling around the world in a superhero costume. It’s not exactly what my careers adviser had told me I should do, but boy did it feel like I was doing the right thing! This was something I had dreamed about doing for the last 15+ years.
The day itself was a real rollercoaster of emotions. One minute I was crying my eyes out uncontrollably (which is a very weird feeling when you’re 38 years old) saying goodbye to my mum, dad, sister and her family. The next minute I felt a huge rush as I burst through the start line of something I had wanted to do for such a long time.
Looking back, all the advice I had received was right: just getting to that start line 2 years ago has without a doubt been the hardest part of this adventure for me. 2 years of saving up as much money as I could, selling everything I had, quitting my job, saying goodbye to friends and family. Everything else I have been through since then (visa issues, weather issues, health issues, bike issues, language issues, a few uncomfortable nights sleeping in tents issues) have been relatively small compared to all that.
I really think it’s a good idea to go for your dreams no matter what they are. I am desperately trying to not write #YOLO, so I won’t and instead I will say this:
Life. This ain’t no dress rehearsal.
